Eleanor Thomas Award

The Eleanor Thomas Award was created in recognition of Eleanor Thomas, a charter member of the Winnipeg Embroiderers’ Guild (WEG). For 30 years, Eleanor had been an active participant in every aspect of WEG and the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada/Association canadienne de broderie (EAC/ACB).
A true fan of all kinds of stitching, Eleanor was quick to share her knowledge, encourage youth embroiderers, widely promote WEG and EAC/ACB, and have a kind and encouraging word for everyone.
Eleanor had an extensive library of needlework technique books that she was keen to share as the "book lady", bringing a suitcase full of books to every meeting. WEG members would place orders for new books via Eleanor and many WEG member's libraries grew because of her.
She was instrumental in initiating and administering the Leonida Leatherdale Award which is presented at EAC/ACB's Seminar. EAC/ACB also created and annually awards a youth bursary in her name in recognition of her contribution to the education of youth embroiderers. Awarded a Life Membership in WEG and EAC/ACB, it is appropriate that this prize – which encourages members to stretch their creative wings and promotes needlework education – is given in her honour.
