WEG Awards: Elinor Thomas Award

About the Award

From the May 2013 edition of The Initial Stitch:

The Eleanor Thomas Award was created in recognition of Eleanor Thomas, a charter member of the Winnipeg Embroiderers’ Guild (WEG). For 30 years, Eleanor had been an active participant in every aspect of WEG and the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada (EAC).

A true fan of all kinds of stitching, Eleanor was quick to share her knowledge, encourage youth embroiderers, widely promote WEG and EAC, and have a kind and encouraging word for everyone.

She was instrumental in initiating and administering the Leonida Leatherdale Award, which is presented annually at each EAC Seminar to the popular choice winner of the Members’ Show. EAC also created and awards a youth bursary in her name annually in recognition of her contribution to the education of youth embroiderers. Awarded a life membership in WEG and EAC, it is appropriate that this prize – which encourages members to stretch their creative wings and promotes needlework education – is given in her honour.”

(The above information is from WEG Policies, adopted 2007)

Each year WEG members are encouraged to submit an entry of their work as part of the Eleanor Thomas Award competition. Entrants' names are kept anonymous and the winner is determined by a secret ballot, popular vote. The winner receives a one-year complimentary membership to WEG and EAC. As well, a hand carved bone pin/pendant is presented to the winner who may wear it for one year.
